I play golf and always, my golf teacher/coach or whatever you want to call them finds something wrong with my golf swing.

But I want to hear what the perfect golf swing is to you.

Too often, beginning and intermediate golfers try and copy the swings of the pros. This isn’t a good idea, because the pros have hit so many thousands of balls that they can make subtle changes to their swings to achieve more power, more spin on the ball, or an intentional fade or draw. Tiger Woods, for example, utilizes a very late wrist uncock which results in more power and longer drives for him, but would most likely result in an errant drive if a beginner did it. The best swing for a novice golfer is a nice smooth, easy swing with very little or no wrist cocking/uncocking, a smooth weight transfer from back to front foot and a full body turn and follow through.

OK, so my family reunion is in a week or two and we’re going to play golf. I need some advice on how to improve my swing. What, in your mind are the key points to a perfect swing and how do you prepare for a game of golf.

The golf swing is basically a natural thing.

The first mistake alot of people make is thinking too much! You cannot concentrate on more than one swing thought.

Try setting up to the ball where you are not too close or reaching for the ball.

Take the club straight back behind the ball. As you turn your shoulders, your hips will follow.

Don’t overswing! Take the club to almost parallel (meaning don’t let the club become more than perpendicular to the ground).

Turn your hips back to the ball and your shoulders will follow.

    Smooth follow through.

First of all….there is no such thing as a “perfect” golf swing….Per the book by Dr. Bob Rotella “Golf is not a Game of Perfect”….Great Book ! Golf is as much a mental game has it is a physical game.
If you set out trying to develop a “perfect swing” you will only be setting yourself up for failure and disappointment. I think for the physical learning curve you would be best to seek out a professional teaching pro….Although they may cost a bit of money per hour, in that hour they will be able to give enough to work on for sometime. There are tons of videos of tour pros on sites like Youtube…search Fred Couple’s swing…one of the best. What makes Fred swing so awesome is his TEMPO. Just like watching Ken Griffy Jr. hit home runs, Fred at 50 can still pound a golf ball well over 300 yrds because of that awesome TEMPO. They don’t like they are even trying to hit the ball hard but obviously they do. In his book Fred admits to trying to hit the #$#$@ out of the ball, but in TEMPO……For the mental side of the house read Dr. Bob Rotella’s books…easy read…fast read….it will change your whole entire thought process about golf but life as well…….

The perfect golf swing is the one which conforms to the body’s angles in relation to the club, and conforms to the physical design of said golf club. Why do you ask anyway ?

The swing that results in the ball going where you want it to go. But if you want to see what a really good swing looks like, try to find film or video of Ben Hogan, he had a really nice classic swing. Modern day golfers Trevor Immelman has a close to flawless swing.

  11. Bogeythedog says:

The perfect swing is not “perfect” in the sense that it can be seen in a text book but one that can be repeated and the results repeated whenever desired.

There is no perfect swing, just watch the pro’s they are all slightly different, from how they start the swing to when they bring the head of the club to meet the ball and finally to their follow through. Just keep watching and practice practice practice. One key advice, eye’s stay on the ball, and don’t try to over swing,
